I first got involved in my Brooklyn community
20 years ago to stop banks and developers from
destroying our neighborhood. I’ve been fighting
powerful special interests on behalf of the people
of New York ever since.
For example, when Mayor Giuliani tried to close
a community center in my district that provides
essential services for children and seniors, I
stood up to him and said no.
My fights are based on one principle - protecting
the people of this city’s neighborhoods - all
our neighborhoods in all five boroughs
- fighting not just for Wall Street, but for Main
Street. Not just for Park Avenue, but Park Slope.
Not just for West End Avenue, but for West Brighton.
During my 16 years on the City Council, I’ve tried
to help people, especially those who need it most:
- I’ve worked to provide relief to elderly
homeowners struggling to pay utility bill increases;
- I helped extend rent protections and am leading
the fight to develop affordable housing in our
neighborhoods;
- I wrote and passed landmark legislation protecting
victims of domestic violence that was the first
of its kind in the nation.
My two daughters go to public school in Brooklyn.
My wife and I know first-hand the challenges our
schools face - over-crowding, low teacher morale
and pay, crumbling classrooms.
I’ve never been afraid to take on tough fights on
behalf of our families and neighborhoods. Those
fights are about the ability of you and your neighbors
to take on City Hall when your quality of life is
at stake - and to prevail. That’s really what being
Public Advocate of the City of New York is all about
— taking on the powerful to protect the people.
And, with your support, that is what we will accomplish
together.
