In the first New York, everything’s fine. Wall Street’s jumping. Disneyland has come to Times Square.

But in the other New York, too many public school children are trapped in schools that cannot work; one out of four working people has no health insurance; families cannot find decent housing at a price they can afford; and, fear divides people and police.

I understand that other New York because it’s the city I grew up in. My mother raised me in the South Bronx, in a five-story walk-up that often had no heat or hot water. While I went to college on two scholarships, many of the guys I played stickball and shined shoes with went to prison.

I learned about the power of opportunity. As Bronx Borough President, I brought new jobs, new housing, and new hope to a borough many had left as dead.

I helped lead the battle against the state over an illegal funding scheme that robbed our schools. I’m fighting to put qualified teachers in every classroom, cut tuition at City College, and expand after-school programs to keep our kids safe. I wrote the law creating the first citizen board to hold police accountable when they cross the line. I will build 150,000 new units of affordable housing for low, moderate, and middle-income families. And I am fighting to keep our community health clinics open and expand services for the uninsured.

As Mayor, I will make this agenda a reality and make New York work for all New Yorkers.
