As a life long resident
of the 35th councilmanic district, I am clearly
aware of the issues confronting its residents. Throughout
my professional life, I have worked to ensure that
the concerns of the residents of the 35th district
and other communities in this city are addressed.
I have addressed these concerns through my advocacy
work over the past 18 years. Through my work, I
have organized two major citywide coalitions: The
New Budget Majority, which publicized issues
of racial inequality in the city budget process,
and the Coalition of African-Americans, Asian-Americans
and Latinos for Justice in City Government.
This coalition was successful in bringing about
fundamental changes in the City Charter, including
provisions for greater representation of people
of color in City government. In addition, I co-authored
two major papers on housing discrimination: “Race-based
Lending in New York State” and “Race and Mortgage
Lending in New York City: A Study on Redlining.”
I see the lack of affordable housing as one of the
primary issues affecting the residents of our district.
As the Director of Housing and Community Economic
Development for the National Urban League, I address
the problem of affordable housing as evidenced by
my involvement in several national initiatives aimed
at resolving this problem. As a result, I have been
able to assist community-based organizations throughout
the country to increase the number of affordable
rental units in their respective neighborhoods.
As a councilman, I will take these experiences and
employ them in my work to provide decent and affordable
housing for my constituents.
