The Comptroller should strike a balance
between fiscal responsibility and economic opportunity
for all New Yorkers. My 25-year record in City
government, combined with my private sector financial
experience, makes me uniquely qualified to safeguard
our tax dollars as the next Comptroller.
A lifelong New Yorker, I am the son of a judge
and public school teacher. After college, I worked
for a Brooklyn Congressman, and in 1983, I was
appointed Brooklyn’s youngest-ever Deputy Borough
President. I served as a Trustee on the City’s
largest pension fund, and on the Board of Estimate,
which approved City budgets and all contracts
over $10,000.
I was appointed to the NYC Board of Education
in 1994, and elected President in 1996. I threw
open the Board’s books so that New Yorkers know
how the $11 billion budget is spent. I increased
accountability, improved reading scores, ended
social promotion, revamped bilingual education
and led the charge to reduce bureaucracy. I stood
up for our children when the State denied education
aid to our schools and I stood up to the Mayor’s
attacks on public education.
The only candidate with private sector experience,
I worked for a Wall Street investment firm advising
states and municipalities (including NYC) on financing
capital projects.
As Comptroller, I will:
- Aggressively audit city agencies to curb
waste and fraud and improve efficient delivery
of city services;
- Prudently invest pension dollars to build
housing, create jobs, and increase economic
development;
- Strongly enforce prevailing wage laws to
protect working families;
- Open more doors of opportunity for qualified
women and minority businesses.
