Our community has
a wide diversity in income, age, ethnicity and religious
affiliation. The area has attracted new immigrants
since the 19th century and continues to attract
waves of newcomers.
Each and every group living in the area has its
own problems, while a multitude of needs is shared
by all of them. As an immigrant and someone who
has lived and worked in the community, I am uniquely
familiar with the needs of the community. My work
with JASA provided me with the expertise in helping
the elderly with their problems.
Here is what I am going to do when elected to the
City Council:
- Sanitation. The sanitation department
must expend more resources to keep our community
clean. An exploding population generates more
waste; the Sanitation Department just hasn’t
kept up with the growing community.
- Signs in the stores. Bilingual signs
should be used in every store. Lack of English
signs in ethnic stores causes a lot of unnecessary
tensions.
- Police/Community relations. I will
work with the Police Department to sensitize
their officers to the cultures and needs of
new immigrants in the area. Good community relations
are essential to keeping the crime rate down.
- Public education. Immigrants present
special language and cultural demands on the
public school system. Funding for programs that
help immigrant children must be increased. Every
child should be given a chance to enjoy every
opportunity provided by the Public Schools system.
- Affordable Housing. Allocate additional
funding to increase the amount of affordable
housing for the elderly and working poor.
