HE KNOWS HOW CITY GOVERNMENT
WORKS: Arthur represented NYC municipal
administrative and supervisory workers for 25 years.
Under Cheliotes’ leadership, the local grew from
4,000 to nearly 8,000 members. Cheliotes is a vocal
advocate for Worker Education, Pay Equity and the
Enforcement of the Civil Service Merit System.
HE FIGHTS FOR HIS CONSTITUENTS: Arthur
advanced the careers of women in government. Cheliotes
instituted training programs and engaged in litigation
to ensure the members, over 80% of them women, could
move up the career ladder through the competitive
civil service merit system. These efforts resulted
in the largest number of women ever promoted to
managerial positions in the city’s history.
HE SUPPORTS EDUCATION: Cheliotes’
commitment to education at all levels is at the
forefront of his leadership. Cheliotes has instituted
educational programs with Queens College and CUNY
to develop the skills and critical thinking workers
need to be effective on the job. With the UFT he
helped start a program that puts school paraprofessionals
back in college to eventually return them to the
classroom as teachers.
HE WORKS FOR SENIORS: Arthur’s dedication
to seniors is exemplified by his work for retirees.
He founded a Union Retirees Division, offering retirees
programs to maintain good health, remain active
in the union and develop new skills and interests
after retirement. He instituted a program to reduce
prescription costs for retirees.
