A recognized
leader with more than 20 years proven experience
in defending our communities, Peter is running for
the City Council because he believes that our communities
are under siege with attacks on our Affordable Housing,
Open Space, Landmarks, Public Schools, Environment,
and Quality of Life.
Time is quickly running out. We need a strong pro-active
City Council person to stand up to the powerful
interests and turn back the tide.
Peter has fought over-development and its adverse
effects on our light, air, and space. He has fought
for tenants rights and to preserve our landmarks
and our open space and parks. He has also fought
to keep our neighborhoods safe and has rallied against
noisy clubs and bars that disturb our communities.
Peter has received numerous citations from the New
York City Council for his exemplary service to his
community. In 1998 during a ceremony honoring Peter
for his community service, Assemblyman Steven Sanders
wrote, “Peter Doukas has been a champion for our
East Side community, whether fighting for tenant’s
rights, for enhancement of much needed open space,
leading efforts for contextual zoning that protects
the aesthetic and environmental concerns of area
residents, or exhibiting steadfast determination
and great effectiveness in reinforcing public safety.”
Peter pledges to preserve our affordable housing
stock by leading the charge to reverse the vacancy
de-control law, by strengthening legislation against
the warehousing of apartments and to provide MCI
tax credits to tenants. He also pledges to vigorously
lobby for sensible zoning laws and to build a state
wide coalition for local home rule over our housing
policy.
