Councilman Leffler is a candidate for
Queens Borough President in 2001. He is running
for borough president to improve our public schools
by reducing class sizes, holding supervisors accountable
for student performance, making sure Queens sees
its share of police presence, and setting up programs
that lead to real jobs with local businesses.
He has lived in Queens since age two and went
to local schools from kindergarten through Jamaica
High School. He has represented Queens on the
City Council for over 23 years. During his tenure
he has prime sponsored 42 bills, sponsored 102
bills, and co-sponsored over 200 bills that have
become law.
As Public Safety Committee Chair (1991-Present),
Leffler stopped gun dealers from selling weapons
without child-safety locks, worked to reduce the
time police and ambulances take to respond to
911 emergencies, conducted oversight hearings
on police abuse, and sponsored the Safe Streets,
Safe City law that hired over 7000 more New York
City police officers.
In 1995/1996 Leffler sponsored laws preventing
the Fire Department from deactivating all street
alarm boxes. He, also, sponsored laws creating
an independent Civilian Complain Review Board,
protecting access to medical clinics, requiring
the police to report the response time to crimes
in progress, and modernizing the 911 system.
As chair of the Environmental Protection Committee
(prior to 1991), Leffler wrote laws that began our
recycling program and shut down the city’s incinerators.
In January 1991, the Environmental Law Section of
the New York State Bar Association honored Councilman
Leffler “In Recognition of Outstanding Accomplishments
in the Enactment of Environmental Protection Legislation
in the City of New York.”
Councilman Leffler resides in Hollis Hills with
his wife, Joy.
