1. What is the most important issue in Council District 31 you would address if elected?

The performance of our public schools and the future of our young people is the most important issue in the 31st District. As a member of the Community Education Council, I am disturbed by the lack of funding and limited classroom space that can disrupt the learning process for our children. If elected, I will work with the schools to address these concerns and make sure that all of our students have the same access to the instructional support and guidance that they need in order to succeed.

2. What other important issues would you address if elected?

In some neighborhoods, overdevelopment has spurred calls for zoning changes to keep one- and two-family homes from being overwhelmed by buildings for four or more families. In other areas, a lack of affordable housing has made it almost impossible for working families to find a home.

Economic development is another important issue in the 31st District. With small businesses making up a large portion of our commercial districts, additional programs, incentives and opportunities must be developed in order to help these businesses grow.

Finally, we should be concerned with the quality of our environment. We need to protect Jamaica Bay and our wetlands from contamination and encroachment by aggressive development. There must also be a renewed effort to develop access to the beachfront in Rockaway, because some of it has been neglected for far too long.

3. What makes you the best candidate for this office?

While I have lived in the 31st District all my life, and have actively participated in community affairs, the one quality that makes me the best candidate for this office is my ability to work collaboratively with others. Before I decided to run I spent months talking to residents of the 31st District, and I have heard the same thing over and over again: people want their Council Member to be accessible and to help them solve their problems. Access, accountability and service – if elected, that is what I will provide the residents of the 31st Council District.
